Hi! I’m Matt…

I have been teaching in the Bay Area for over 28 years, though I began my career as a pianist at the ripe old age of 3 ½. I trained for 15 years to become a concert pianist. Then, I lost a bet with my younger sister and had to join choir during my senior year of high school, where I quickly realized that I had “a voice.” I had found my calling.

While in college, I began coaching my fellow students and taking on some of my own voice coach’s younger pupils. I soon realized that the work was rewarding and that I loved teaching. The rest, as they say, is history!

Along with my private vocal studio, I work as a contract vocal coach for various record labels including: Sony, Island Def Jam, Interscope, Bad Boy Records, and Spunout Records.

My students’ Broadway & National Tour credits include: Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Mama Mia, 42nd Street, Victor Victoria, Evita, Mathilda the Musical, Fun Home, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Finding Neverland, Hamilton, Aladdin, Hair, and Amadeus.

I have coached/performed with/collaborated with: The Eagles, Bette Midler, Sutton Foster, Isabelle Allende, Brian McKnight, Babyface, Smash Mouth, Papa Roach, Clay Aiken, MDK, Jermaine Dupri, Dream, Flipsyde, and O-Town, to name a few.

My students have performed in operas at: San Francisco Opera, Opera San Jose, Chicago Lyric Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Orlando Opera, and New York City Opera. My students have also performed at regional theatres across the U.S. including: TheatreWorks, A.C.T., Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Center Repertory Theatre, 42nd Street Moon, S.F. Playhouse, 5th Avenue Theater, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, The Cleveland Playhouse, Ford’s Theater, Goodspeed Musicals, The Guthrie Theater, La Jolla Playhouse, and Papermill Playhouse to name a few…

Along the way, I have picked up quite a few performance credits of my own and have been seen on the stage in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Some of my favorite roles have been in Les Miserables, Phantom, Carousel, Jesus Christ Super Star, The Three Musketeers (starring Sutton Foster), The Merry Widow, Gianni Schicci, Tales of Hoffman, Die Fliedermaus, and Lucrezia Borgia.

When not teaching or performing, I love spending time with my lovely wife Sarah and two boys Kai and Beckett. We have a small “zoo” at our house including ducks, chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs, koi, turtles, dogs, and cats. I love cheering on the A’s, Warriors, and Cal Bears. Gardening and fishing fill the rest of my time.
